Internet Bible Study - October and November 2009

The October and November lessons have been posted on the website.

October - AN UNCOMFORTABLE QUESTION AND ANSWER

The reader is asked to consider the weight of God’s question “Will a man rob God” and its answer. The reference scripture shows God’s view that Israel’s pattern of giving was reflective of their fellowship with Him. God’s call for offertory giving was not an end unto itself but rather a method of drawing His people unto Himself.

Reference Scripture:

Malachi 3: 6 – 8 (Will a man rob God)

Supporting Scriptures:

None

November - A MATTER OF OWNERSHIP

Our attitudes regarding giving are often influenced by our confusion over ownership. Readers are reminded that God is the creator and owner of all things. It is He who gives to us and entrusts us with stewardship. Even our offertory giving is from the storehouse of His possession.

Reference Scripture:

Psalms 24:1 (Earth is the Lord’s)

Supporting Scriptures:

1 Corinthians 6: 19 & 20 (you are not your own, you are bought with a price)

Acts 17: 28 & 29 ( we are His offspring)

Romans 8:15 (Abba Father)

Acts 17: 24 – 28 (God not served by human hands, God gives that we might seek Him and find Him)

1 Chronicles 29: 10 – 16 ( King David – we have given only what comes from your hand)

Internet Bible Study - September 2009 - Ritual or Relationship

Two reference scriptures are used to illustrate Jesus’ view of giving in the context of relationships. In His comments Jesus both affirms the value of giving and emphasizes the priority of nurturing relationships. The focus of the relationship building about which Jesus spoke is our human relationships. The discussion explores how the scripture intertwines the nurturing of our human relationships with the nurturing of our spiritual relationship with the Father.

Reference Scripture:

Matthew 23:23 (you have neglected the more important matters – justice, mercy)

Matthew 5: 21 – 24 (first go and be reconciled with your brother)

Supporting Scriptures:

2 Corinthians 9: 1&2, 12 – 15 (effect of Corinthian giving on others)

John 17: 1 – 3 (This is eternal life)

Matthew 22: 35 – 40 (1st & 2nd commandment love God , love neighbor)

1 John 4: 7&8; 12 – 20 (love one another, love comes from God)

John 13: 34 – 35 ( by this shall all men know you are my disciples)

John 17: 20 – 22 (Jesus’ prayer for our oneness)

2 Corinthians 9:7 (cheerful giving)

Book Review - More Than the Gift: A Love Relationship

The new book received a review from The Black Christian Book Review. It reads in part:

"Larry Robinson who has served as budget chairperson in his local church is a gentleman worth listening to when it comes to a discussion on Christian giving or tithing. More Than The Gift by Larry Robinson challenges Christians to examine just exactly what Christian giving is all about--Is it simply giving a ten percent of one's money, or is there more to it?

Your giving to God will become more meaningful after reading More Than The Gift."

I praise God for this positive review.

Faith Report

It appears that the book distributor has confused the files between the workbook and the new book. Their multiple attempts to correct the problem have only made matters worse. So, the inconsistent display of the book covers and book content on the Internet book sites continues at a time when interest in the new book appears to be building. I request that you join me believing that all things work together for good for those that love the Lord and are called according to his purpose. We are more than conquerors through Christ who loves us.

I will not be discouraged. God will be glorified and His purposes served.

Praise Report

On Friday, More Than The Gift: A Love Relationship was listed by Amazon.com as their #1 selling "new release" in the Stewardship category. I continue to praise God for His activity both the seen and the unseen.

Praise Report

I have understood from the beginning that I would only personally witness a small portion of God's activity through this ministry effort. The scripture is clear that we should walk by faith and not by sight so I must take care not to get caught up in a numbers game. Still, I was encourage to notice that on Monday the new book was listed as the #2 best selling new release in the stewardship category.

Also on Barnes & Noble, a reader of the Workbook Edition gave it a 5-star" rating

We praise God for his activity, both the seen and the unseen.

Pray for "Worldwide Impact."

New Book Praise Report and Update

Praise Report
Over the weekend, the new book: More Than The Gift: A Love Relationship was listed as the 3rd best selling new release in the stewardship category.

After a year of trying to contact him, I received a call from my former pastor from St Paul AME Church in Cambridge, MA. After 30 years of pastoring this church he is now retired. The church staff forwarded my correspondence to him in Florida. He called me last week and shared that in this phase of his ministry he feels a burden to teach regarding the "Promises of God" and that one of his areas of interest is the topic of giving. He was excited about reading my book.

Update
There has been a mixup in the electronic files between the workbook and the new book. The content of the new book appears on the page for the workbook on the Amazon.com website and the cover for the workbook is being shown as the cover for the new book on the BarnesandNoble.com website. The problems are being corrected.

Please keep praying for Worldwide Impact.

Amazon.com "Look Inside" Feature

I have decided to utilize Amazon's "Look Inside" feature to give potential buyers a "sneak preview" of the book's content. This feature allows individuals to preview the front cover, back cover, table of contents, first chapter, a random passage or a passage containing a key word of their choice. I was previously hesitant to use this feature because of some of the contract language but I decided to trust the Lord with that issue. The feature is now active. While the feature is intended to increase sales, I pray that the previewed messages bless the previewers whether they ultimately purchase the book or not.

What I Believe

It dawned on me that visitors to this website would probably desire or need some perspective on my belief system. Outlined below is a summary of some of my central beliefs that are relevant to the subject of this website and ministry. The list is representative, not exhaustive.

About My Faith

I believe in one God who is manifested in three person: The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit

I believe in the inspiration, inerrancy and sufficiency of the Holy Scripture

I believe that all have sinned

I believe that the wages of sin is death and that man cannot save himself from that death

I believe that eternal life is about the depth of our relationship with the Lord rather than the length of our existence. Every soul will live forever either in the presence of the Lord or apart from His presence

I believe that Jesus (The Son) is the way, truth and life and that no on comes to the Father except through Him.

I believe in Jesus’ virgin birth, sinless life, atoning death for the sins of the world and bodily resurrection

I believe that our salvation is a gift from God, made possible by the atoning death of Jesus and is available to be received by anyone who places their faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior

I believe in the present-age ministry of The Holy Spirit, who lives in believers, gifts them and guides them

I believe in the present-age ministry of the church (the body of Christ) to tangibly demonstrate the love of Jesus in and to the world, to model discipleship and to make disciples

I believe that Jesus will return to judge the world and receive His bride the church

About Our Giving
I believe the opportunity to give is a gift from God to us.

I believe that God’s purposes for Christian giving always has been and continues to be about much more than the gift itself.

I believe that the attitudes and substance of our giving present mirrors that reflect back to us the condition and quality of our relationship with God.

I believe that God uses our giving to nurture our relationship with Him and each other, witness to the world and bring glory to His name.

I believe our stewardship is intended for our benefit. It is a role of preparation in our relationship with the Lord. It prepares us for ownership of our eternal inheritance and the true riches He has ordained for us since before the dawn of creation.

I believe that God must be the focus of our giving rather than the blessings He gives to us as a natural consequence of that giving.

I advocate Generous Giving. While I want believers to start tithing, I don't want them to stop there. I believe that our obsession with arguing over the appropriateness of tithing as the model for Christian giving is a distraction of the adversary. It causes us to lose focus on God and His purposes for our giving. I believe that tithing was never meant to be a goal unto itself, but rather a path intended to lead us to a higher destination in our relationship with the Lord. Deuteronomy 14:23b gives a glimpse of the tithe’s purpose: “..... so that you may learn to revere the Lord your God always” (NIV). I believe that tithing was/is intended as training wheels for our spiritual development. It provides a developmental step as we grow in spiritual maturity and in our willingness to submit our all to the Lord. Submission to the discipline of tithing lays a foundation on which a life of total submission and generous giving can be built. Our Lord seeks our willingness to surrender our all to Him but it is hard to surrender 100% if we struggle with giving 10%.

Praise Report

There have been a number of setbacks in the loading of the book's data on the Amazon and Barnes and Noble websites. The title was initially listed as "More Than The Gift" rather than "More Than The Gift - A Love Relationship". This has caused confusion between the workbook and the new book. Also the image of the book cover has yet to be loaded.

The waiting is the hard part but I choose not to be discouraged. God is greater than any challenge the adversary can set before me. While the battle of difficulty is not over, I choose to Praise God is advance for the victory.

Praise the Lord!

Introduction: GenerousGiving.org

I would like to introduce you to an organization that I believe is equally committed to moving the body of Christ from ritualistic giving to relational giving. It's name is Generous Giving. As their name suggests, the founders have discovered the freedom that exists as we move past legalism in our giving. The story of Generous Giving began in the 1990s when five friends came together, challenged by the question of what could happen if Christians were truly generous with their resources, living out the joy of giving instead of the duty of tithing. They have amassed a tremendous array of resources and references to help guide believers on that journey of spiritual growth.

I have included a link to their website in "Sites you might not know."

Praise Report

I will never fully appreciate the impact of what God is doing with the message He has given me but every now and then He gives me a glimpse. While searching the Internet last night, I discovered that the Christian Leadership Alliance had placed my website on their list of Recommended Websites. They described it as " A new and innovative annual appeal program for congregations."

The CLA is an association that serves more than 8,000 members working in more than 4,500 organizations worldwide. The former Christian Management Association and the former Christian Stewardship Association joined together in April 2008 to create Christian Leadership Alliance—the nation's leading resource for enhancing the organizational effectiveness of churches and para-church ministries.

A link to their website is included under "Sites you might not know about."

Also, an online book store in Australia and 2 in India are carrying the workbook for sale.

Internet Bible Study - August 2009 - A Love problem

Internet Bible Study
A LOVE PROBLEM
This lesson examines the traditions surrounding Valentine’s Day and then draws parallels to Christian practices in offertory giving. It suggests the premise that our relationship with God is a love affair and that giving is a fundamental expression of love. Trouble in our attitudes toward offertory giving reflects problems in our love relationship with God.
Reference Scripture:
John 3:16
Supporting Scriptures:
Mt. 20:28 (Jesus gave his life)
John 15: 13 (greatest love – give life for friend)
Ephesians 5:25 (husbands love wives like Christ who gave himself for the church)
Romans 8:32 (God gave his son for us)

Coming Soon; More Than the Gift - A Love Relationship

The input received has been invaluable. The book is a better manuscript because of your input and prayers. We've gone to press. The book will be available from Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com at the beginning of August.

My goal was/is to remain faithful to God's leading and message. I believe I have done that. I have no agenda other than obedience. I would never have chosen this topic on my own. Yet, I am excited and humbled by the revelation that I have received. I am planting this seed in obedience and look to God for its watering, increase and harvest.

From my perspective this is not about me. It is certainly not about self-promotion. Yet, I have come to realize that from God's perspective, I am the project. Each assignment is always part of His plan to advance the kingdom within us and conform us into the image of Christ. Please pray that the book will glorify our God, bless the body of Christ and that the process will help accomplish in me that which God intends.

Yours In Christ,
Larry

New Book Update

I just signed off on the manuscript for More Than The Gift - A Love Relationship. It will be published in August and available on Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com. This is an important step in this ministry. I sense that this book is a key component in the work God is accomplishing in His kingdom through this ministry. Please pray that this seed bears fruit.

I feel led to explore and utilize a variety of marketing initiatives. I pray for discernment. Attached is the July You Tube Video.

Editor's Comment

Recently, the editor of my (soon to be released) second book made this comment:

“I should also remember to pray for guidance in editing this book especially since I'm sure it's destined to bring enlightenment to countless Christians around the world. I'm in awe of the inspiration you received in conceiving and writing the book. I expect there will be many requests for permission to translate it into many languages soon after it's released.”

I thank God for the encouragement those words brought me. He is editing the book from Panama so the comments contained added meaning. As I reflect on them, I pray that they are more than words of flattery but words of prophetic truth.

Internet Bible Study - June/July

I've been negligent in posting new chapters for this study. I am committed to getting back on track. I have attached two new lessons for your study.

GOD’S PLAN FOR THE FINANCIAL SUPPORT OF HIS MINISTRY
Tithes and offerings are discussed as God’s plan for the support of ministry efforts and ministry workers. However, in God’s financial plan, the Lord must always be the focus of the giving. The work and workers of ministry are His designated beneficiaries of the tangible gift. Emphasis is given to the fact that tithes and offerings as a pattern of giving to the Lord preceded Judaism as a religion and the Mosaic Law as a religious practice and still remains relevant for the Christian Church.
Reference Scripture:
Malachi 3:10 (Bring all the tithes)
Supporting Scriptures:
Leviticus 4 (sin offering)
Exodus 30: 11-16 (ransom offering)
Numbers 18:20-24 ( 1st tithe – ministry support)
Deuteronomy 14:22-26 (2nd tithe – pilgrimage)
Deuteronomy 26:12 & 14: 28-29 (3rd tithe – benevolence)
Malachi 3:8 (will a man rob God)
Exodus 25 (freewill offering – tabernacle)
2 Chronicles 7 ( freewill offering Solomon)
Hebrews 9:11 – 10:18 (Christ’ death all sufficient offering for our sins)
Genesis 14: 14 – 20 ( Abram’s tithe)
Genesis 28:10 – 22 ( Jacob’s tithe)
Matthew 23:23 (Jesus’ sanction of tithing)
Leviticus 27:30 & 32 (tithe belongs to God)
Deuteronomy 14:22 – 23 (so that you may learn to revere the Lord your God)
Numbers 18: 20 – 24 (Levites received no inheritance in the promised land)
Deuteronomy 14: 27 – 29 ( ( remember the Levites who have no inheritance)
Numbers 18: 8 -20 (offerings given to the Levites)
Matthew 25: 31 – 46 (Jesus’ priority on the less fortunate – sheep & goats)
1Corintians 9: 13 – 14 ( those who preach the gospel should live of the gospel)
2 Corinthians 9: 7 (cheerful giver)
2 Corinthians 9: 12 - 13 (Men will praise God for their obedience and sharing)

GOD’S PLAN IN ACTION
While the workers and work of the ministry are beneficiaries of the tangible substance of offertory giving, its full impact is intended by God to be more far reaching. The benefit is intended to be reciprocal. An examination of the Biblical account of Elijah and the widow of Zarephath demonstrates how God uses giving to establish a relationship of mutual benefit between His ministry and the recipients of ministry efforts.
Reference Scripture:
1 Kings 17: 1 – 23 ( Elijah and the widow)
Supporting Scriptures:
Luke 10: 1 – 9 ( Jesus send the 72, take no purse, eat what they give you)

General Update & New Website

I sense momentum building as I work toward the publication of the second book. The copy-editing process in progressing smoothly and the editor has been particularly encouraging (I'll share about that in another Blog). I have developed a series of web-video promos. I plan to launch one each month (God willing) on You Tube and God Tube for the balance of the year. I have developed four so far but I'm having difficulty getting the sound to work for the God Tube upload. I've created a "channel" on You Tube so all the promos will be aggregated in a single place.

I've been encouraged to update my website, so I have. My original design was intentionally simple and formal. This time, I've tried to lighten-up "a little". Next time I'll add a photo of me without a jacket and tie (if I can find one). I have limited my design options to the iWeb templates on my iMac because of their seemless integration with the iMac tools I use to manage the whole project and the minimal cost. At this juncture, I am running a very low budget operation. There are obvious limitations to my skills and tools but prayerfully the fresh look and incorporation of the web-videos will enhance the usability of the site.

Please continue to prayer as I move forward under God's leading.

WebVideo Promo

With the development of the second book and a few seminar templates, I am now comfortable with increasing the visibility of the project. I wanted to have an array of materials to offer and the second book was a critical component of the portfolio. This second book will make it much easier for readers to understand and convey how the messages I have received are connected to each other. The internet will continue to be my primary source of marketing. It is the least expensive and has a worldwide reach. The effort will build gradually as I polish and expand my seminar and group presentation materials.

Today I published the project's first promotional piece on You Tube. Please view it on You Tube under the title "More Than The Gift"or my website: morethanthegift.net Using the quotation marks on You Tube will expedite your search!

Please keep praying!

New Book - More Than Than The Gift -A Love Relationship

I ask for your prayers as I finalize the next book for publication. This book is based on the podcasts. While covering similar material as the workbook, it is organized to reveal how God is leading me to connect-the-dots. It is formatted as a devotional. I anticipate publication mid-to-late summer.

I asked Eddy Gordon to design a cover that was visually linked to the first book. He created something special. It moves me. I pray that it inspires you.

Monday's Meditation - March 09, 2009 - Bringing Glory To God

A new podcast has been published to the More Than The Gift website and iTunes Store:

Bringing Glory To God

Discussions regarding Christian offertory giving can get bogged down by battles over which biblical principles should guide our giving. I think that part of the problem arises as we focus on scriptures in isolation rather than also trying to connect-the-dots. I have purposefully chosen to illustrate these lessons from both Old and New Testament scriptures. I have offered a glimpse of how God is leading me to connect-the-dots. The messages that I have received flow from the harmony and wholeness of God’s Word. God has not changed and He has been unveiling His purposes and plans for our giving since the time of Cain and Abel. Revelation of those purposes and plans are found throughout the Holy Scriptures, yet the church continues to struggle with interpretations of the messages and their appropriate application.

While I have tried to provide a harmonizing perspective through this lesson series, I have little doubt that differences of opinion will remain until Christ’s return. I’m reminded of Paul’s discussions of legalism and grace regarding the eating of meat that had been offered to idols. Paul knew that the insights he offered would not conclusively settle the debate. So, he concludes his discussion by saying “whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31 NIV) I can think of no sounder advice on which to base this last lesson. In Isaiah 43:7 we are told that God created those who are called by His name for His glory. I will conclude this lesson series by attempting to point us and our offerings toward that purpose.

This is the final podcast in the series of podcasts regarding the theme : "What Our Giving Accomplishes".

Monday's Meditation - March 02, 2009 - The Giver's Willingnesson For Eternity

A new podcast has been published to the More Than The Gift website and iTunes Store:

The Giver's Willingness

Abraham had waited 25 years for the fulfillment of God’s promise and then (when Abraham was 100 years old) the fulfillment came. Sarah bore her only child, Abraham’s son, Abraham’s heir. Isaac was a source of great joy and hope for Abraham. Isaac was a symbol of God’s faithfulness and promises of blessing. So, I can’t imagine the thoughts Abraham had and emotions he felt when God requested that he offer Isaac’s life as a burnt offering. In spite of what he may have felt, Abraham’s response was amazing. Abraham exhibited no hesitancy. He did not question, barter or argue with God. He arose early the next morning and began his journey to the appointed place of sacrifice. Abraham exhibited great faith. On the third day, Abraham instructed his servants to stay with the donkeys while he and Isaac journeyed to the appointed place of worship. Before leaving them Abraham spoke words of faith, stating that both he and Isaac would return to them. The writer of Hebrews explains that Abraham was convinced that even if he sacrificed Isaac unto the Lord, God could raise Isaac from the dead. Abraham prepared to offer Isaac’s life not knowing that Isaac’s life was not the offering that God was really seeking. At the appointed time God provided Abraham with a substitute object of sacrifice, a ram in the bush. Why was a substitute acceptable? Why was a sacrifice of lesser value sufficient? It was acceptable because more than the tangible object of Abraham’s giving, the offering God was seeking was Abraham’s willingness to withhold nothing from Him. In raising the knife of sacrifice to offer his son, Abraham demonstrated to himself and us his unrestrained willingness to give his all to the Lord. No object of sacrifice was greater than the gift he had already given.

Monday's Meditation - February 09, 2009 - Our Preparation For Eternity

A new podcast has been published to the More Than The Gift website and iTunes Store:

Our Preparation For Eternity

In his recent best seller, The Treasure Principle, Randy Alcorn offers insight regarding how our handling of material possessions reveals the relative value we place on time and eternity. He portrays eternity as an endless line and time as a dot on that line. Given the insignificance of the dot when compared to the immeasurable length of the line, he suggests that a wise person should conduct their lives in light of line rather than the dot, in light of eternity rather than time. Two illustrations help clarify his point. First Randy suggests that most of us would think it odd if during an airplane flight, a passenger placed expensive draperies over the windows, hung pictures on the cabin wall and began redecorating the restroom. Someone expending so much effort to get comfortable on an airplane would puzzle us because both the duration of the flight and their residence on the plane would be relatively brief. It would seem a waste of resources to treat as permanent that which was clearly temporary.

Next Randy asks us to imagine that we lived in a southern state (that was part of the confederacy) as the civil war was coming to an end and victory by the Union soldiers was imminent. Randy points out that as the time of our living under the rule of one governmental system was coming to an end, it would make sense that we would be vigilant in preparing to live under the system that would replace it. Prudence would suggest that we convert as much confederate currency as possible to things that would be of value after the war ended because at the war’s end confederate currency would be worthless. So while a portion of our resources would continue to be used to sustain us, we would also urgently begin diverting resources in preparation for the transition.

While most of us like to think that we behave rationally, I have concluded that many of us spend our time decorating airplane cabins while not preparing to ever leave the plane and go home. Many of us spend our lives accumulating things without considering that they will soon become worthless. Many of us exhaust our life’s time and life’s resources without ever preparing for our inevitable transition from time to eternity.

This podcast is a continuation the series of podcasts regarding the theme : "What Our Giving Accomplishes".

Monday's Meditation - February 16, 2009 - Our Preparation For Our Inheritance

A new podcast has been published to the More Than The Gift website and iTunes Store:

Our Preparation For Our Inheritance

When our twin sons were infants, my wife and I researched investment options to save funds for their future. One very interesting option was a gift trust managed by a prominent investment firm. This investment had a remarkable track of performance. It had increased in value by more than 20% for each of the preceding 10 years. However, there was one characteristic of the trust that concerned us. It was an irrevocable trust, which required that any contributions we made become the permanent property of the trust for the benefit of our sons. We could put money in but we couldn’t decide later to take it out. At the predetermined time the trust would be available for our sons to use as they wished. We could not decide to withhold the funds if they made poor choices. That was a very scary thought because in spite of our love for our sons, we knew it was impossible to predict whether our infant sons would become wise stewards as adults. We had no desire to pre-fund unwise choices they might choose to make later. Prudence suggested that we invest the funds in a manner where we would retain control over their distribution. So, we chose not to commit substantial treasure to our sons’ ownership prior to their developing and demonstrating the judgment to handle it. However, we simultaneously committed to using a weekly allowance to help them acquire and demonstrate that judgment. While their allowance was small, it seemed big to them. It gave them the opportunity to acquire basic skills for handling wealth by practicing with a small amount. Handling their allowance was a foundational step in preparation for incremental increases in responsibility and eventually receipt of their inheritance. When I think about it, it becomes clear that God gives each of us opportunities for earthly stewardship to prepare us in very much the same way.

Monday's Meditation - January 19, 2009 - Positioned For Greater Blessing

A new podcast has been published to the More Than The Gift website and iTunes Store:

Positioned For Greater Blessing

The Holy Scripture is full of rich and wonderful promises for the believer. They are exciting to uncover and humbling to ponder. Each promise reveals the matchless nature of God’s love for us and the benefits He wants us to experience through our relationship with Him. Some promises are simply our birthright, as we become daughters and sons of God through faith in Jesus Christ. Others promises are rewards or blessings that flow from our actions. In this spirit, God has ordained that abundant blessings flow from our giving. As a result, our giving actually positions us for greater blessings than we would otherwise experience. I am reminded of the Old Testament account of the widow from Zarephath. When Elijah met the widow, by her own admission, she and her family were positioned to die. Their circumstances had brought them to the point of starvation. Then God sent Elijah with a word of hope, but this word of promise was preceded by a request that the widow give from the very last of her provision. As she gave, she and her family were repositioned. Rather than being recipients of death, they became recipients of an increase in their food supply, an increase in health and an increase in faith. Greater blessings flowed from her giving than she ever imagined.

Leadership Seminar

As a result of the positive response of the church and its leadership to the principles of the More Than The Gift Project, I have been invited to conduct a leadership seminar for the ministerial staff and deacons of Progressive Baptist Church (Aurora, IL) on January 10, 2009. The senior pastor, Rev. Dr. Roy Brown, has committed to teach a 4-week series from the workbook during January and February of 2009. I solicit your prayers for the success of these efforts.

Internet Bible Study - Chapter 21

CHAPTER 21 - SUMMARY REFLECTIONS
Readers are challenged to consider the multi-dimensional nature of God’s message and plan. While many aspects of God’s plan for offertory giving are explored in preceding discussions, none of them alone reveals the fullness of God’s intent. However, when all of the aspects are considered and implemented together, then like light in the facets of a gemstone, the brilliance of His intent is reflected and His glory is revealed.

Reference Scripture:
2 Corinthians 9: 12 – 15 9 (Thanksgiving, praise, prayers result from the obedience & generosity of the Corinthian giving)

Supporting Scriptures:
Matthew 25: 31 -46 (as we ministry to others we minister to Christ

God has called me to plant seeds, but deep inside I also long to see the effort bear fruit. I have to admit, I'm a little tired. So, I needed that. Praise God for His grace. Thanks for your continued prayers and support.

Internet Bible Study - Chapter 20 - September 2008

CHAPTER 20 - A LESSON FOR CHURCH LEADERS
God’s guidance for offertory gifts is not limited to church members but guidance also exists for church leaders. The Biblical account of Jesus’ feeding of 5000 men with a boy’s lunch establishes a pattern for church involvement in God’s ministry efforts and the distribution of offertory gifts for ministry work.
Reference Scripture:
John 6: 1 – 12 (2 fish & 5 loaves)

2 Corinthians 8 (Macedonian giving)
Matthew 14 (2 fish & 5 loaves)

Internet Bible Studies - July and August 2008

I apologize for my delay in posting the July Internet Bible Study. In light of the delay, I am posting both July and August simultaneously. The Internet Bible Study is now available on the More Than The Gift web site

July 2008 - CURSE OF THE TREADMILL
The prophet Haggai warns of the consequences of using God’s possessions to enrich ourselves while we neglect the needs of ministry. Readers are reminded that if it seems that their financial gains yield no actual progress, it would be wise to give careful thought to their patterns of giving to determine whether they are neglecting God.

Reference Scripture:
Haggai 1: 1 – 7 (consider your ways)
Malachi 3: 8 – 9 (you are under a curse)
Supporting Scriptures:
Galatians 3 (redeemed from the curse by Christ)

August 2008 - THE PROMISED BLESSING
This section gives a brief review of scriptural promises associated with our giving. Abundant blessings flow from giving that honors God with its content and our conduct. However, seeking to obtain the promises should never be the primary motivation for our giving. Readers are encouraged to honor God with their giving and then to view His blessings not as the goal but as a natural consequence of Godly Giving.

Reference Scripture:
Malachi 3: 10 – 12 poured out blessing)
Luke 6: 38 (Give and it will be given unto you)
Proverbs 3: 9 Honor the Lord with your wealth , firstfruits… then your barns will be filled to overflowing)
Supporting Scriptures:
Isaiah 46:11 (If God speaks it he will do it)
Psalms 27: 13 ( I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living)
Psalms 23 (my cup runneth over)
1 Kings 17 (Elijah & widow)
Matthew 14 (2 fish & 5 loaves)
Genesis 15: 1 ( I am thy exceedingly great reward)

Project Praise Report

I want to extend my appreciate to Dr. Trunnell D. Felder (pastor of New Faith Baptist Church International) and his staff for their decision to include More Than The Gift as one of the class for their Fall Bible Study. New Faith Baptist Church International is a 6000 member church located in Matteson, Illinois. The classes will begin in late September. Praise God!

Please join me in prayer that God will allow the seed of this word to fall on good soil and draw those who participate in the classes into a deeper relationship with Him and each other. Pray also that as they are blessed they will be motivated to share this word and workbook with others.

Thanks for your support!

Praise Report

The workbook is ranked among Amazon’s “Hot New Releases” in the Stewardship category. It’s ranked #9.

This week I received my first web site visit from someone in Bosnia.

There is a new book out “A Revolution In Generosity: Transforming Stewards To Be Rich Toward God”. It’s principle author is a college professor with has authored 22 other books. I recently sent him a copy of the press release. I continue to send out emails of my press release to pastors, churches, other church leaders, denominational conventions, newspapers, radio stations, bookstores , college professors, etc. Most people don’t respond to unsolicited emails (you have to follow-up). My follow-up efforts are slow. Surprisingly this author responded without a follow-up. He took time to send me a word of encouragement.

Praise God! I am encouraged!

Workbook - Amazon.com Update 07/09/08

I promise that I won’t trouble you everyday BUT!!!! It’s amazes me what God is doing. I don’t know how long it will last but His activity is a great encouragement at a time when I need encouragement. Earlier today, the workbook dropped out of the top 100 and was unranked (which I expected). However, as of an hour ago the workbook was ranked #21 out of 1300 in the “Stewardship” category and #104,448 out of millions in books in general. I don’t understand. I won’t try to. I am just developing my marketing strategies. I don't have any advertising and no one knows who I am. The MBA in me knows that the time frame and sample size is too small to be statistically meaningful but the truth of the matter is that it is meaningful to me. Praise God!

More Than The Gift - Workbook Update

There were some formatting and typing errors in the original file. So, the first printed copies of the book contained those errors. Since I published through an on-demand publisher the impact is minimized. A PDF of the manuscript is maintained by the printer and can be updated within few days. Books are only produced as they are needed. Amazon only purchases a few copies for its inventory and then reorders as necessary. It is currently sold out of its inventory. I’ve updated the PDF file and I’m confident that corrected books will be available next week. Please delay any new orders until next week.

Amazon.com gives some sales performance data (though they do not divulge how it is calculated). The workbook is classified in the Christian Stewardship category. As of today, the workbook ranked #83 out of 1300 books in the category. So, the workbook makes the top 100 list for the category. It’s all pretty amazing to me. Praise God!

Thanks for your prayers!! Don't stop!!

Annoucement - The Workbook Has Been Published - PRAISE GOD!!

The publication process moved faster than I anticipated. The workbook is now available for ordering from Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Praise God! Thank you for all of your support, but don’t stop now. Please consider one or more of the following:

1) Continue to prayer for this ministry effort,
2) Order a workbook for you or someone you know,
3) Encourage someone else to do so,
4) Post a book review on the Amazon or Barnes and Noble website and/or
5) Post a podcast review on iTunes

Next Project Phase

Now that the workbook has gone to press, I can give more attention to the next project. I am working on a book comprised of excerpts from the podcasts. I am using a devotional format rather than a workbook format. While the material is essentially the same, the target audience is different. Some people will read a devotional piece who wouldn’t tackle a workbook. My observation is that many of the people who have advanced copies of the workbook, haven’t actually written answers to the questions. Ultimately, the workbook may be used more by church leaders and teachers while the podcast book may be more readily embraced by individual believers. At any rate, my job is to follow the instructions that I’m receiving. God will do the rest.

The podcast book is organized around the central themes that God revealed to me from the workbook and will be a “quick read”. The themes are:

God is interested in more than just our gift
The gift is still important because of what it reveals and
The gift is important because of what it accomplishes

I may add one more theme. The completion of the book is contingent on my progress in doing additional podcasts. Pray for my productivity.

P.S. I’m researching whether I can be a speaker at the Urban Ministries Conference in Chicago (Fall 2008). Pray for God’s leading and blessing.

Thanks!

Workbook Publication Countdown

I have authorized Aventine Press to publish the More Than The Gift Workbook. Today I signed off on the final changes and authorized the publisher to send the workbook to the printer. In approximately 30 days the workbook will be available for ordering from online bookstores like Amazon, Barnes and Nobel. Thus it will be available worldwide. I serve an awesome God. I am amazed by His mercy and grace, yet I am aware that publication is not my destination. It is simple part of the journey. Much work lies before me but I want to thank and praise God for how far he has brought me. Thank you for walking the journey with me. Thank you for your comments, criticisms and prayers.

Prayer Request

I ask for your prayers. This will be a challenging month and I am in a mental rut.

Today I posted a new Internet Bible Study on the SBC website. The study is entitled “Polluted Offerings”. I encourage you to share it with someone you know.

I expect to receive the formatted draft of the book from the publisher this week. Publication should be completed approximately 4 weeks after I edit and return it. The workbook will be available online from Amazon and Barnes & Nobles in July.

In support of that, I need to step-up my marketing campaign ( announcements, press releases, book reviews, etc).

I also want to post two new podcasts this month. I need to reestablish consistency with this effort so that I can publish the “podcast book” during the 1st quarter of 2009. The podcast and the podcast book are targeted for a different audience than the workbook. I discuss this issue in some detail on my website.

Thanks for your love and support!

Love!

Larry

Internet Bible Study - Chapter 17

CHAPTER 17 - POLLUTED OFFERINGS
Just as there are acceptable offerings, there are also unacceptable offerings. The reference scripture outlines several attributes that can render our gifts unacceptable to the Lord: polluted attitudes, polluted content, lack of obedience and deceptive giving practices.
Reference Scripture:
Malachi 1: 1 – 14 (polluted offerings)
Supporting Scriptures:
Leviticus 10: 1 – 2 (Nadab and Abihu – strange fire)
Proverbs 3:9 (first fruit)
Deuteronomy 23: 18 ( wages of prostitution not an acceptable offering)
Matthew 26:15 (Judas betrays Jesus for 30 pieces of silver)
Matthew 27: 6 (It is against the law to put blood money into treasury)
Leviticus 22: 17 – 25 (lame sacrifices forbidden)
1 Samuel 15: 22 – 24 ( obedience is better than sacrifice)
Acts 5: 1 – 10 (Ananias and Sapphira)
Malachi 1: 14 (cursed is the cheat)

Internet Bible Study - Chapter 16

CHAPTER 16 - TRUSTING GOD WITH YOUR TREASURE
Similar to the preceding section, the discussion here also focuses on our values. Our actions reveal both what we value and where we place our trust. The reference scripture warns against placing our trust in wealth that is uncertain rather than in God. In a supporting passage of scripture, Jesus helps us understand that through our daily activities we are working to store treasure either on earth or in heaven. He cautions that “where your treasure is, there will your heart be also”. God wants our hearts.

Reference Scripture:
1 Timothy 6: 17 – 19 ( command rich … not to be arrogant nor to put trust in wealth)

Supporting Scriptures:
Acts 17:28 ( In Him we live and move)
Deuteronomy 8:18 (God gives us the ability to gain wealth)
Luke 12: 13 – 34 (Jesus teaches about treasure- rich fool & take no thought what you shall eat… where your treasure is

Internet Bible Study - Chapter 15

CHAPTER 15 - YOUR MONEY OR YOUR LIFE
Jesus’ encounter with a rich young ruler facilitates this discussion regarding our need to establish clear priorities concerning the use of the possessions under our stewardship. The young man was asked to choose what he valued most. His initial question to Jesus suggested that he valued eternal life but when asked to choose between his money and eternal life he turned away sorrowfully. God is not against us possessing wealth but He knows the danger of wealth possessing us. Offertory giving provides an opportunity to clarify our priorities.
Reference Scripture:
Mark 10:17 – 22 (rich young ruler)
Supporting Scriptures:
Luke 16:13 ( no servant can serve two masters)
Mark 8:34 – 37 ( what good is it for a man to gain the whole world)

Monday's Meditation - March 31, 2008 - Our Fellowship In The Ministry

A new podcast has been published to the More Than The Gift website and iTunes Store:

Our Fellowship In Ministry

Every now and then, I am reminded that our human experiences often convey spiritual messages. Not so long ago, as I was carrying a large box through our home, my youngest son stopped me and asked “Daddy can I help?” A part of me wanted to politely reject his offer. The item was awkward and heavy and his attempt at assistance would actually slow down the progress I could achieve alone. However, when I looked down into his eyes I realized the true significance of the moment. The task at hand immediately lost its importance and I turned my focus to my son. I told him to grab a corner of the box. I repositioned my grip to make certain that there was no more weight on his corner than he could bear. As he placed his tiny hands on the box, his eyes began to glisten. Together we completed the chore but now with a greater sense of fulfillment and joy.

On the human level, God allowed me to see that there is a bond that grows out of our co-laboring together. My son’s partnering with me in my activity gave us an opportunity to fellowship together. Our working together actually nurtured our growing together. On the spiritual level, God allowed me to see that my activity with the Lord has the same effect. It’s not that God needs my help to carry the load or get the job done faster but when God allows me to participate with Him, God is offering me an opportunity for fellowship. After I received this spiritual message, God then led me to consider the profound implications this revelation has for my giving. My giving is never meant to be a burden. God does all of the heavy lifting. He is just inviting me to come along side His activity. When I extend my hands to help and I think about what God is really doing, like my son, my eyes begin to glisten with joy at the opportunity for fellowship through co-laboring with my Father.

Announcement - More Than The Gift Website Launched

As I move closer to the publication of the "More Than The Gift Workbook", I believe it is important to expand the project's internet presence. I anticipate publication of the workbook this summer. This weekend I launched a website for the project. The website will expand my capability to keep the internet community informed about the breadth and progress of the project (including the publication of the workbook). The website will complement the blog. The blog format facilitates an open dialogue about recent events but makes it harder to find background information. The website allows me to dedicate separate pages to topics of interest, making information searches easier.

The website url is: http://web.mac.com/lrobinson67/

A link for the website has been added to the "Additional Resources" section of this blog.

Thank you for your prayers!

Internet Bible Study - Chapter 14

CHAPTER 14 - WHY DID SHE DO THAT? – A RESPONSE OF GRATITUDE
Not only are believers recipients of great mercy but we also receive amazing grace. God’s grace is His extension of favor that we have not earned and do not deserve. It is difficult to acknowledge God’s unmerited favor without being overwhelmed with gratitude. The responses of Mary, the sister of Lazarus, and Zacchaeus, the tax collector, to the mercy of Jesus are examined to illustrate expressions of gratitude through giving.
Reference Scripture:
John 12:1 – 8 (Mary and the anointing perfume)
Supporting Scriptures:
Luke 10:41 – 42 (Mary chooses the better part, sitting at Jesus’ feet)
John 11:25 (I am the resurrection)
John11: 14 – 15 (I am glad I was not there)
Luke 19: 1 – 10 ( Zacchaeus)

Internet Bible Study - Chapter 13

CHAPTER 13 - WHY DID SHE DO THAT? – A RESPONSE OF LOVE
The next examination of motive involves the Biblical account of Jesus’ visit to the house of Simon the Pharisee. In this account we see how those who receive and recognize the great mercy of God respond with great love. The woman’s response to Jesus illustrates that our love for God involves more than emotion, it involves action and that its natural expression is selfless giving.
Reference Scripture:
Luke 7:36 – 47 ( Simon the Pharisee and the sinful woman)
Supporting Scriptures:

Internet Bible Study - Chapters 12

A new lesson has been added.

CHAPTER 12 - WHY DID HE DO THAT? – A RESPONSE OF FAITH
This is the first of three topics discussing examples of motives for giving that please God. Abraham’s willingness to offer his son Isaac as an offering to God is examined to discern what motivated his actions. Abraham’s offering above all else was an offering of faith. He was willing to give Isaac because he believed God. He knew that God would either provide an alternative sacrifice or raise Isaac from the dead. He establishes a human example of giving without reservation with the belief that God will provide.
Reference Scripture:
Genesis 22: 1- 15 (Abraham willing to sacrifice Isaac)
Supporting Scriptures:
Hebrews 11:17 – 19 (Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead)
Genesis 15:1 ( I am your shield, your very great reward)

Introduction - Tommy Gathen - A Song Writer's Heart

I want to introduce you to Tommy Gathen. Tommy is another anointed brother in Christ. I met Tommy while he was a member of my local church. Tommy was a founding member of the ensemble named "GBW". The name was an acronym for the church's mission: Glory God, Buildup the saved, Win the lost. At that time, it was easy to see that God was nurturing the musical gift He had planted in Tommy. In addition to playing the piano and singing, Tommy continued taking piano lessons seeking to pursue excellence in his craft. Tommy and his family moved to Tennesse a number of years ago but he continued to work out that which God had planted in him. He now serves as the Minister of Music for his local church and through diligent effort has birthed his first formal musical project entitled " A Song Writer's Heart". The project is under the "Majestic Kingdom Melodies Entertainment" label.

The CD is a compilation of Christian Love Songs, Worship Melodies and contemporary soulful instrumentals. Tommy wrote/arranged all of the songs (except the Lord's Prayer of course). Several other vocalists are featured performing the songs. The music is very fitting for weddings, banquets, or just quiet times of meditation.

I have created a link to the label's website as I expect this to simply be the first of many projects. Enjoy!

Internet Bible Study - Chapters 10 & 11

Two new lessons have been added to the sbcwheaton.org website

CHAPTER 10 - GIVING THAT GETS GOD’S ATTENTION
The Biblical account of a widow’s offertory gift of two mites is examined from the perspective of its proportional magnitude. Readers survey several Biblical accounts where individuals were willing to render their all. The decision to surrender all to the Lord always gets His attention and such giving is memorialized in scriptures.
Reference Scripture:
Mark 12:41 – 44 (widow’s mite)
Supporting Scriptures:
Genesis 22:11 – 18 (Abraham… you have not withheld from me your son)
Romans 8:31 – 32 (He who did not spare His own son)
Philippians 2: 3 – 8 (He humbled himself and became obedient to death)

CHAPTER 11 - A QUESTION OF MOTIVE
Giving offertory gifts that are valuable is not enough. God wants more. Why we give is as important as what we give. This discussion reviews Jesus’ teachings about improper motives for giving. The examination explores the roles of both the individual giver and the local church in protecting the purity of our motives for giving.
Reference Scripture:
Matthew 6: 1 – 4 (acts of righteousness before men)
Supporting Scriptures:
2 Corinthians 9:7 (give what he has decided in his heart)
Genesis 3:1 – 6 (Eve wanted to be like God)
Isaiah 14: 12 – 14 (Lucifer desired to be like God)
1 John 2: 15 – 16 (pride of life)
Proverbs 16:18 (pride before destruction, haughty spirit before a fall)

Monday's Meditation - December 10, 2007 - God's Provision For Ministry

As the budget chairperson for my local church, I have observed that many Christians struggle with the quantity of church funds that are expended for the compensation of church workers and benevolence ministries. The care extended to the church staff members and the less fortunate can be viewed as poor stewardship by some believers.

Yet the familiar scripture , Malachi 3:10, still reads: “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house….”

I wonder how often we consider the practical intent of that statement. The food wasn’t for ministry programs. It was for people. It was for the workers of ministry and the less fortunate. This approach was designed by God and reflects His intent for the support of ministry both then and now.

This is the first in the series of podcasts regarding the theme : "What Our Giving Accomplishes".

As always, I invite you to receive Monday’s Meditation as “food for thought “ for the week, then let it become “fuel for action” for the weekend and beyond.

Monday's Meditation - Nov. 12, 2007 - The Giver's Heart

God desires to give us eternal life. However, eternal life is not measured by the length of our existence. It is measured by the depth of our relationship with the Father and the Son (John 17:3). God offers us the opportunity to give that we might experience life in Him more abundantly. He knows that we cannot serve two masters. We cannot serve both God and money. When material accumulation takes an unhealthy position in our value systems, He often allows us to be confronted with that critical question of choice: “Your Money or Your Life?” Sadly, when faced with that choice, many believers respond “I’m thinking”.

Today’s episode is the final episode in the series affirming the importance of what our giving reveals. Our next podcast will begin the series affirming the importance of what our giving accomplishes.

Mondays Meditation - October 31, 2007 - The Givers Reverence

Recently, I’ve been curious about the background of the Halloween tradition. Given its name, I’ve never quite understood what it was really about. The root word "hallow" means to make holy, to sanctify, to set apart for God. Although the costumes, candy, dunking for apples and carving of pumpkins may be fun, our celebrations often do not make clear what (if anything) is being hallowed. While I considered those thoughts, Deuteronomy 14: 22&23 came to mind. This passage begins with an instruction that could easily be paraphrased “Be sure to hallow a tithe of all you produce each year” and the passage ends by explaining the purpose “ so that you may learn to revere the Lord your God always”. Reflecting on this passage, I realized that our reverence for the Lord is enhanced as we hallow our offertory gifts to Him. As I think about offertory giving in our churches today, I wonder how often givers consider their gifts as holy, sanctified, specifically set apart for God. I wonder if our approach to giving helps us to learn to reverence the Lord. I wonder, if as with Halloween, many of us have lost sight of the intent and therefore fail to fulfill God’s intended purpose for our giving.

In today’s episode, we continue to affirm the importance of what our giving reveals.

Monday's Meditation - October 08,2007 - The Giver's Stewardship

Jesus begins the parable regarding an unjust steward ( Luke 16) with a master telling his servant that the servant must give an account of his stewardship. Like that servant , a day of reckoning will come for each of us. On that day, our deeds will declare our allegiance and answer Jesus’ implied question: Whose steward are you?

In today’s episode, we continue to affirm the importance of what the gift reveals, even though God is actually interested in more than the gift itself.

Monday's Meditation - Sept. 24, 2007 - The Giver's Understanding of God's Ownership

Genesis records that God entrusted mankind with stewardship of the earth. The trap that mankind falls into over an over again is that we (like Nebuchadnezzar) confuse stewardship with ownership. Whatever dominion God allows us to experience represents delegated authority not a transfer of title. That which we seemingly obtained through our efforts still belongs to God. Failing to reconcile the issue of true ownership leads to confusion in our relationship with the Lord and our response to Him. When we fail to acknowledge God’s ownership, we tend to behave like we are out of our minds.

In today’s episode, we continue to affirm the importance of what the gift reveals, even though God is actually interested in more than the gift itself.

I invite you to receive Monday’s Meditation as “food for thought “ for the week, then let it become “fuel for action” for the weekend and beyond.

Monday's Meditation - September 10, 2007 - The Giver's Gratitude

Ten lepers stood by the side of the road, at a distance, calling in a loud voice to Jesus for mercy and grace. Ten lepers demonstrated their faith by following Jesus’ instruction that they behave as if they were healed even before their healing visibly manifested itself. Ten lepers received a miracle and yet only one returned to acknowledge his healing. Only one threw himself at Jesus’ feet. Only one used his loud voice to render praise and thanksgiving. Seeing this, Jesus asked his disciples “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?” This biblical story reminds me that each day, each one of us should consider whether we are more like the "one" or more like the "nine"?

In today’s episode, we continue to affirm the importance of what the gift reveals, even though God is actually interested in more than the gift itself.

Internet Lesson 8 - Ritual or Relationship

2 Corinthians 9: 1&2, 12 – 15 (affect of Corinthian giving on others)
John 17: 1 – 3 (This is eternal life)
Matthew 22: 35 – 40 (1st & 2nd commandment love God , love neighbor)
1 John 4: 7&8; 12 – 20 (love one another, love comes from God)
John 13: 34 – 35 ( by this shall all men know you are my disciples)
John 17: 20 – 22 (Jesus’ prayer for our oneness)
2 Corinthians 9:7 (each man should give what he has decided in his heart)

Internet Lesson 7 - A Matter of Perspective

Following the discussion on ownership is an examination of perspective. Sometimes the issue is not one of true ownership but of physical possession or control. Our society has become comfortable with the assumption of ownership through physical possession. The parable of the unjust stewards is examined to shed light on God’s view of this perspective.
Reference Scripture:
Mark 12: 1 – 12 ( unfaithful stewards)
Supporting Scriptures:
1 Corinthians 4:7 (what do you have that you did not receive)

"Time out" - September 2, 2007

I live in the Chicagoland area and suffered damage during the storm on 08/23/2007. We loss power, our backup pump (with battery) failed and 4" of water backed-up in our basement. Water is an amazing substance. The basement was finished but now its a mess. In addition, my iMac has developed a mysterious problem sustaining its connect to the internet, so I can't podcast. We aren't fretting. The damage is repairable. My family is safe, we still have our home and are conscious of God's care, even in the midst of the life's thunder showers.

The issues aren't big but they have forced me to pause. I ask for your prayers, that I may discern God's message for me during this "time out". If He is speaking, I don't want to miss what He's saying.

Monday's Meditation - August 13, 2007 - The Giver's Love

It was February of 1999. For several months, I had shared a series of instructional thoughts on giving with my local church congregation just prior to the collection of the offering during Sunday worship service. As I sought the Lord for guidance concerning what to share for the upcoming Sunday, I was drawn to the spiritual symbolism embedded in our Valentine’s Day tradition. A clear and simple principle emerged. Love gives.

In today’s episode, we begin to affirm the importance of what the gift reveals, even though God is actually interested in more than the gift itself.

Monday' Meditation - July 30,2007 - God's Interest In Ou Relationships With Others

It is interesting to note that God often assesses our giving by first assessing the condition of our human relationships. While we focus on our gift, He chooses to examine how we are treating one another. Even the earliest scriptural account of giving (the story of Cain & Abel) speaks not only to the issue of the acceptability of Cain’s offering but also to issues involving Cain’s relationship with God and Cain’s relationship with Abel. How ironic it is that in a story about giving, Cain asks the eternal question: “Am I my brother’s keeper?” The fact is that while we may desire for our giving to be viewed and judged as an independent spiritual activity, God refuses to do so and He purposefully keeps Cain’s question ever before us even while we give.

In today’s episode, we continue to examine why I believe that even though God gives us scriptural instructions to give offertory gifts, He is actually interested in more than the gift itself.

Monday's Meditation - July 16, 2007 - The Giver and His Relationship With God

One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question, Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law? Jesus replied, Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment (Matt. 22: 35-38). In this response to a question from the crowd, Jesus establishes that our highest pursuit is our love relationship with the Father. All other requirements flow from the pursuit of that relationship, even our giving.

In today’s episode, we continue to examine why I believe that even though God gives us scriptural instructions to give offertory gifts, He is actually interested in more than the gift itself.

Internet Lesson 6 - A Matter of Ownership

Our attitudes regarding giving are often influenced by our confusion over ownership. Readers are reminded that God is the creator and owner of all things. It is He who gives to us and entrusts us with stewardship. Even our offertory giving is from the storehouse of His possession.
Reference Scripture:
Psalms 24:1 (the earth is the Lord’s)
Supporting Scriptures:
1 Corinthians 6: 19 & 20 (you are not your own, you are bought with a price)
Acts 17: 28 & 29 ( we are His offspring)
Romans 8:15 (Abba Father)
Acts 17: 24 – 28 (God not served by human hands, God gives that we might seek Him and find Him)
1 Chronicles 29: 10 – 16 ( King David – we have given only what comes from your hand)

Praise God for the following testimony from Tene who facilitated a bible study at work using one of the chapter's from the More Than The Gift Workbook:

I thank and praise God for the More Than The Gift series. The series was the focus for my job's monthly bible study topic. What a great blessing to be able to discuss, and share God's true purpose for our giving. As a result, we received a praise report from one of our bible group members..she has rededicated herself to start tithing again.

Monday's Meditation - July 2,2007 - The Gift and The Giver's Faith

There is a big difference between talking about faith and applying it. If God gave a college class in faith, it would be entitled "Applied Faith" rather than "Faith Theory". God wants faith working in every aspect of our relationship, even in our giving. As Hebrews 11: 6&7 remind us: without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.

In today's podcast episode we contiinue to examine why I believe that even though God gives us scriptural instruction to give offertory gifts, He is actually interested in more than the gift itself.
